How to Spray Can Thompsons Water Seal on Deck?

In order to properly spray can Thompsons Water Seal on deck, it is essential that you have the following tools: A sprayer, a hose clamp or other suitable tool, some kind of rubber gloves and safety glasses. If you don’t have these items then there are alternatives which will work just fine.

Step 1: Cleaning your Sprayer

Before spraying can Thompsons Water Seal on deck, you need to clean your sprayer. You may use any type of cleaning solution, but one of the most effective ones is alcohol based cleaner. Alcohol based cleaners are very powerful and they work best when used in combination with another product such as Windex or dish soap.

When using alcohol based cleaners, make sure that you do not get any on your eyes. Make sure that the area where you plan to spray can Thompsons Water Seal is completely dry before beginning.

Step 2: Preparing Your Deck

Once you have cleaned your sprayer, it is time to prepare your deck for spraying can Thompsons Water Seal. First of all, remove any loose dirt or debris from around the deck.

Step 2: Preparing the Deck

The first thing you need to do is prepare the deck so that it doesn’t get damaged during the spraying process. You can either use a foam pad or a sponge soaked in rubbing alcohol. Both of these methods will protect your deck from getting dirty during the spraying process.

Once you have prepared your deck, make sure that all edges are covered with sandpaper. It is best to do this after a rain storm or period of rainfall. Next, you need to remove all furniture or other objects which may be in the area where you plan on spraying your deck. You will need to make sure that there is at least 6-12 inches of clearance around the deck in order for the can Thompsons Water Seal to properly dry.

Step 3: Filling

When filling your sprayer, make sure that you do not fill it all the way to the top. Instead, leave a small amount of room at the top so that you do not create too much pressure.

Step 4: Attaching Your Hose

Attach the hose to the nozzle and crank the handle as fast as you can until the pressure builds up. Make sure the can is on a level surface and will not fall over since this may cause it to leak.

Step 5: Begin Spraying

Begin spraying your deck as you would normally do. Be sure to apply a thick coat on all of the wooden portions and then move along to the next section. Make sure that you get the underside and top of each board in order for it to properly dry.

If pressure is building up slowly for you, then stop cranking because you could break your sprayer.

Step 5: Wearing Your Gloves

At this point you should be wearing a pair of rubber gloves to protect yourself from the pressure of the can Thompsons Water Seal. It is also a good idea to wear safety glasses as well.

Step 6: Applying the Sealer

Applying the sealer is very easy.

Step 6: Outlines

Wait about 15-20 minutes before doing any outlining so that the first coat has time to partially dry. If you don’t wait then the outlining may pull some of the first coat off. Outline all of the edges by making horizontal or vertical lines with the can at a distance of about 2-4 inches away from the wood.

You don’t need to be a professional to get good results. Just make sure that you apply it in a well-ventilated area or outside and away from any people or pets. It is also very important to follow all of the safety instructions on the can.

Step 7: Cleaning Up

Once you have finished spraying, you need to clean up immediately. Cleaning up means taking your time and cleaning up any mess that may have been made during the spraying process. Do this on all sides of the wood so that you have created a square around each piece.

Once this is done you can move onto the next step.

Step 7: Flooding

Wait about 10-15 minutes before flooding so that your can Thompsons Water Seal has partially dried. Use your gloved hand to “flood” over the horizontal and vertical lines that you made in the last step. Start at one corner and drag your finger across in a downward motion.

Be sure to dispose of your gloves, filter, and any other materials that came in contact with the sealer. You can use a wet rag for this. Be sure to put everything in a plastic bag so that you don’t make a mess. If you want extra protection for your deck then you should apply at least two coats of the sealer. You need to flood with enough pressure so that it will sink into the cracks but not so much that it ruins your lines. Do this step for every corner of every piece of wood until the entire deck has been flooded.

Step 8: Applying a Second Coat

After flooding, you need to wait a full 24 hours before applying a second coat of can Thompson’s Water Seal. Remember, the longer you wait between coats the darker your deck will become.

Step 8: Cleaning Up

Once again, you need to clean up after the drying process. Dispose of any waste and put the cap back on the can until you’re ready to use it next.

Step 9: Letting It Dry

You should always let your sealer dry for at least 24 hours before exposing it to any sort of moisture or else you could end up with ugly spots on your deck (and that’s no good). If you only have one day then it is better to wait than to try to apply a second coat too soon because it will probably just end up dripping and ruining your work.

Step 9: Cleaning Up

Clean up everything that was used for the project including the clothes you were wearing at the time. If you don’t do this then it can dry and become very sticky and difficult to get off. You also need to dispose of everything properly.

It is best to use a fan to speed up the process of drying.

Step 10: Enjoying Your Deck

Once your sealer has dried for at least 24 hours you can now enjoy the fruits of your labor! Be sure to keep an eye on your deck in case you need to reapply any sealer every once in a while.

Step 10: Final Touches

Once the sealer is dry then you can apply a second coat if desired. If it was a very large deck then it might be a good idea to put some furniture on it or around it to give the area some definition.

Step 11: Cleaning Up

Now is the time to clean up and take care of any remaining messes. After that, you should be done with your deck and be able to enjoy it! You can also place plants around your deck to break up the open space and make it look more natural.

Have fun making your deck look exactly how you want it!

How do I remove Thompson’s Water Seal?

Unfortunately, Thompson’s Water Seal is a very stubborn substance that can be quite tricky to remove. The best way to get rid of it is to use acetone or mineral spirits. Be sure to test in an inconspicuous place before just pouring either one directly on your deck because it could possibly ruin the sealer and make it more difficult for you to do touch up work in the future.

As you can see, it is not very hard to build a deck. It just takes a little time and patience and you will be enjoying your new deck in no time! The satisfaction of building your own deck is well worth the experience and you will have created something that you can enjoy for years to come with friends and family.

If you do make a mistake and pour something on top of the sealer that you shouldn’t have then you can try using a wire brush to scrub it off but that can take a while so it’s best to try the acetone or spirits first.

Thompson’s Water Seal is a great way to keep your deck protected and looking great for years to come. Don’t be afraid to try it out on your own deck because it is very easy to use and when it dries, it will protect your deck from practically anything Mother Nature can throw at it. Have fun!

This is the brand of stain I used on my deck. I chose this one because it was water-based, fast drying and very easy to use. I really like the natural color it created and it goes well with my deck.

This is the sealer I used on my deck. It forms a very thick barrier that protects the wood from just about anything (short of maybe a backhoe). This also creates a very nice shine that makes the wood look great.
