Do Microwave Venting Require Vents?
Venting is a method of keeping your home free from harmful radiation levels. The problem with using vents is they are not always effective at reducing the amount of radiation exposure.
There are many different types of ventilation systems available, but most do not work well enough to reduce or eliminate all radiation levels. Some vent designs may even increase the level of radiation levels in some areas due to their design.
Microwave venting is one type of ventilation system that does have good results in reducing the amount of radiation exposure. A microwave vent works by directing the heat away from your home.
Most microwaves come in two flavors: high frequency (HF) and low frequency (LF). High frequencies are used for cooking and other tasks while LF waves are used for entertainment purposes such as television reception.
A microwave vent works by opening up the door between the room where the microwave is located and another area of your house. The air in this second area then passes through a small hole in the floor.
When it hits a metal surface, it creates a tiny vacuum which sucks any unwanted radiation out of that space. This allows you to enjoy less annoying TV signals without having to turn on your oven or use an unvented gas stovetop.
The problem with using a microwave vent is it requires a certain distance between the microwave and your house. If you don’t have access to a vent, then you will need to install another way of getting rid of the heat such as opening up windows or turning on fans.
There are several ways to create space between your home and the microwave. One option is through insulation.
Insulation is any material that helps trap heat when exposed to air.
When the metal surface gets hot enough, it needs to be replaced. This should be done a few times per year at the very least, and more often if you use your microwave a lot.
If there is no visible wear or tear on the metal plate, then you can be sure that there are hidden dangers of having a dirty microwave vent.
The bleach that you put into your microwave has not evaporated as expected. This is usually done by placing a material between two layers of thin metal.
The bigger the gap, the more effective the insulation will be.
Once you have installed your insulation, you will need to leave a certain amount of space between the microwave and your house. You will need to leave space for a vent as well.
Always make sure you allow at least two inches of space on all sides. This prevents any accidents from occurring such as burning yourself on the metal. In fact, the solution in your microwave now resembles a plate full of clear gel. How did such a thing happen and what should you do next?
You can add things to the microwave later, but you better act fast. Your mom taught you that the first step to solving any problem is to assess the situation.
So far, it’s pretty clear to you that you have caused a problem.
If you find that your house is too close to the vent, then you will need to fix this before anything else. You can do this by either moving the microwave or your house.
Measure from the outside of the microwave to the wall where the vent is located. This should tell you how much space you have available.
Let’s say for example our measurement was 28″. This means that there is at least 28″ of space between the walls and the vent.
You need to get that mess out of the microwave, but how are you going to do it? You could try to boil it out with water, or maybe put ice in there. What could possibly go wrong?
If you put water in the microwave, turn it on and place a bowl full of water inside, what would happen? Would it explode? Would it leak out onto your kitchen floor? Would nothing happen at all? You can now use this number to decide which solution you will try first.
Go ahead and pick up the vent cover. You should see a screw right in the middle.
Use your tools to remove this screw. Now you can either slide the metal cover to the left or right, exposing the vent hole.
If you see any visible cracks in the vent, then you know that your best option is to move the microwave.
Look around the kitchen for a bowl, a microwave safe bowl. You decide to use the one that has leftover spaghetti in it from last night´s dinner.
It’s the perfect size to hold water so you fill it up and throw it into the microwave.
Now, you can try different things to see what happens. Try to predict what will happen first.
Will adding water cause an explosion? Even if you apply the sealant, the microwave will continue to cause problems. This doesn’t mean that it’s useless. It just means that it needs to go somewhere else. Maybe your mom would let you put it in her kitchen?
If you decide to keep the microwave in its current position, then you need to seal up the vent hole in order to prevent any future leaks or spills from entering it. We’ll get more into that later.
Does the bowl have to be full of water in order to cause an explosion? What other variables are there to test?
You can also try different materials as well. Try water with a variety of other items in the bowl.
Either way, you need to get that mess out of the microwave right now. If you choose to add water to it, be very careful.
Do not stand directly in front of the microwave and be sure to open the door quickly after starting it. Even with the bowl of water inside, there is still a chance of something exploding or leaking out of the vent.
The steam from the water should help loosen up the gunk around the edges of the vent. Try some of the leftover fruit juice.
What about some of the leftover soda? How about some of those leftover egg shells? How about a combination of everything? There are a lot of variables to test so be sure to keep track of your results.
After testing each of the available options, you may or may not have solved the problem that you began with. You could choose a different method if you would like, but this one has worked very well for you in the past.
After waiting about five minutes or so, there should be plenty of steam built up inside the microwave. Now you can open the door and see if the gunk has loosened up at all.
You might need to help it along a little bit by sticking a butter knife in between the vent and the edge of the hole in the wall. You may still need to call in a professional. Maybe the vent hole just needs to be plugged up with some kind of sealant. Maybe you should use more than one type of sealant?
As you can see, there are many different ways that this story could end. By changing just one variable in the beginning, changes the outcome of the entire story.
This is how real life works too! Everything effects everything else. Be careful not to bend the vent itself as that could cause a draft.
As for what you’ll use as glue, you can use just about anything sticky. You could try some of the leftover syrup you used on the vent in the first place.
You might need to help it out by adding a little bit of water to it though.
You might need to go get something to eat while you wait for it to dry. How long will that be? You could always check the expiration date on the back of the bottle.
In the meantime, you can start clearing out some of the rotten food that’s already in the garbage can.
After sitting and waiting for about an hour, you can try to put everything back together again. Just be careful not to get any of the sticky substance on your fingers.
It would be best to wear some rubber gloves while you work with it. The quicker you get this done, the quicker you’ll be able to eat.
You’re finally done cleaning up after your little experiment. You’re pretty hungry right now so you may as well check the time and see if it’s lunch time yet.
After putting everything away, you take out your phone to check the time.
Pulling up the stopwatch app, you hit the start button as soon as you see the time on the microwave. Hopefully the lunch ladies haven’t already begun serving lunch yet.
Six minutes is all it takes for you to sprint back to the cafeteria and grab a tray.
Piling mashed potatoes, green beans, and some sort of meat onto your tray, you head over to the nearest cashier station to pay for your food. After receiving your change and a number to sit at, you look for an open table.
You end up having to share a table with a couple of girls from your class. You’ve had a class or two with both of them before, but you don’t really know either of them personally.
You quickly say “hello” and then start to dig into your food. It feels so good to have something other than sweet stuff in your stomach!
One of the girls starts to talk to you while you’re eating. She asks you if you’d like to play hooky from school today.
She says she doesn’t feel like going and was planning on calling in sick to stay home. You would rather not get into trouble at school so you politely decline.
It seems that she got the wrong impression though and thinks you’re blowing her off! Before you can correct her, she stands up angrily and kicks your leg under the table, hard.
Then she starts yelling at you and calling you names.
