Carpenter ants are one of the most common ant species found in homes. They have been known to live in almost any type of structure including basements, attics, crawl spaces, garages and even under furniture. Carpenter ants are small insects with black bodies and yellowish legs. Their size varies from less than half an inch long to over two inches long.

Some individuals may grow up to three inches long!

The ants’ name comes from their habit of building their nests out of wood or other materials such as mud, leaves and sticks. These structures often resemble wooden ships. The workers inside these vessels build the nest while others carry out the necessary tasks like gathering food and water.

Carpenter ants are very hardy creatures that can survive in many different types of conditions. They prefer warm climates, but they will also live in cold areas if it means a longer period without food or water. They are not aggressive, but they do tend to sting when threatened. When attacked, they will release a cloud of noxious gas that causes pain and discomfort to anyone nearby.

There are several ways to control carpenter ants:

1) Chemical sprays containing boric acid (boric acid is found naturally in certain plants). The chemical works by killing the ants immediately. However, this method requires constant application of the chemicals which can cause health problems for humans and pets.

These ants are not aggressive towards humans and will only sting when threatened. However, they do make a painful bite. When attacked, the ants will attempt to defend themselves by using their stings and biting at your skin. If left untreated, however, these bites can become infected with bacteria which can lead to severe infections and even death.

Ants use chemicals called pheromones to communicate with each other and attract mates. When ants enter your home, they are attempting to create a new colony or find a new food source. Ants are very territorial and mark their trails with pheromones. When the ants enter your home, they will continue to follow the pheromones back to their nest.

The longer the infestation persists, the more trails will be created between the nest and your home.

Trails are often located around water pipes, kitchen areas or even bathrooms. The scent of these chemicals is very strong and can lead several trails all over your house. If you see several trails coming from different parts of the house leading to one specific area, you most likely have an ant infestation!

In order to prevent ants from getting into your home in the first place, you will have to eliminate as many of the pheromone trails as you can. You can do this by pouring boiling water over the ant mounds.
