Type 1 – Vent to Exterior or Outside?

The first type of venting is when the appliance is connected to the wall and then vent it’s air flow through a pipe or duct to another location. For example, you have your oven on the top shelf of your kitchen counter. You want to keep it from overheating so you connect it directly to a fan in order for it not to blow hot air out onto other surfaces. Now, you have a vent to the outdoors.

You may also have appliances like dishwashers which are connected to the wall but they don’t get enough airflow to cool them down. So, you might install a vent on the side of your house where there is less wind and let it blow out into the street. Then, you could even put one near your swimming pool because it will still circulate water around and provide cooling for your family.

Most of the time, you don’t want to vent appliances to the exterior of your house because they release moisture which can be bad for the wood on your house or even make it start growing mold. Not to mention, it would be bad for the people who are outside because it would mess up the air pressure. So for most appliances you would vent them to the outside, through a wall or roof or whatever.

Now, what about my oven? Since I only have the one oven, I can’t vent it to the outside or through a wall. So, I am going to have to vent it through the roof.

What are my options for venting through the roof?

Venting Type 1A and 1B are both viable options for me.

This is the more traditional way of venting your stove. You could build a box on top of your roof and put a pipe that extends outwards from it. From there, you would have an elbow pipe that goes straight up. This way, the air flow coming out of the pipe will go straight up until it gets far enough away from the house that the hot air dissipates.
