Paulk workbenches are made from solid hardwood with various thicknesses ranging from 1/4″ to 3/8″. They are not made from some inferior softwood. This is the only bench where you can use your Japanese planes and chisels to a real advantage. The top, or working surface of the bench is normally around 33-1/2″ wide by 15-1/2″ deep.

You can trace the history of this workbench back to the original Stanley design of 1892. The only difference is that it has been modified to suit the needs of a 21st century craftsman . Some people prefer a wider bench of around 40″ wide and a few like a narrower bench at around 27-1/2″ wide.The original design was modified and updated by a professional toolmaker and craftsman named James Krenov back in the ’70’s.

By making the legs longer or shorter and by changing the height of the legs, the design can be modified for your specific needs.
