How To Remove Ceramic Tile Adhesive From Concrete Floor?

To remove the tile floor from a concrete floor you need to remove the tiles first. Then you need to remove the adhesive. A heat gun is a common tool that is used to remove tile adhesives but it is not always necessary. It also can be messy and there is always a risk of damaging your hardwood underneath if the temperature gets too high.

The first step is to cut the tile along the edge and pry up an edge of the tile. Once you have an edge up then you can slide a flat metal putty knife underneath and pop up an entire row of tiles. Once you get one row loose then you can pry up another row and soon you will have all the rows popped up and be able to just slide the tiles out.

Now comes the part of removing the sticky stuff that was underneath the tiles. There are a few ways to do this. The first way is to use a heat gun or hair dryer and warm the adhesive until it gets soft. Then you can use a scraper to lift it up off the floor. An old set of metal keys in a loop on a handle also works great for this.

Once the adhesive is loose, you can just pull it up in big chunks and throw it away. Sometimes the floor underneath gets damaged when using a heat gun and the chunks of adhesive get too hot and they burn the flooring. A lot of times when this happens, the burned adhesive smell will persist in the house for quite some time. Another way to do it is with a product called Goof Off which is a type of paint thinner. Just pour it on the tile adhesive and let it sit for a while and then scrape it up just like the keys or heat method.

It doesn’t work quite as well but it does work well enough to get the job done.
