If you want to waterproof multiple objects, you have to buy multiple jars of Thompson Water Seal.

But you do not need to worry too much about this because Thompson Water seal can be used on wet wood if you use it at the right time. The reason why so many people complain about Thompson Water seal drying is that they apply it before the wood is ready for use.

This will help it dry faster.

2) Take a 2-3 inch wide paint brush and apply THompson Water Seal onto the wood in a direction that goes against the grain. This will help the seal coat the wood fibers without letting it dry on the surface of the top layer of wood.

3) By far, the easiest way to do this is to use rainx weatherproofing on your wood. The next thing that you need to know is that Thompson Water seal can be used on wet wood, but you have to dry it out first.

1) Wet your wood using a hose. Preferably with cold water because warm water encourages mold growth.

2) Apply Thompson Water seal generously.

3) Wait a day for the wood to dry. You might need to add more Thompson Water seal if it doesn’t get absorbed by the wood.

It’s not as good as Thompson Water Seal but it’s easier to apply and doesn’t require near as much upkeep.

How Many Coats Of Thompson Water Seal Do I Need?

You need at least three coats of Thompson Water Seal before it will be waterproof. In fact, many professional applicators will tell you that you need at least four coats before you get full protection.

Between each layer, you need to wait several hours before you apply another coat of Thompson Water seal. If you don’t wait long enough, the sealer won’t bond to the wood properly and it will come off in a few weeks.

Thompson Water seal last between 6-12 months depending on the environment. If you use it on surfaces that are under water frequently, then it will only last a few weeks.

Anyone Can Apply Thompson Water Seal Correctly Right?

The guy who sold you the Thompson Water seal seemed pretty confident that you could apply it just fine. However, many people are not actually good at DIY and they just pretend that they are.

Just because you can follow pictures in a book, doesn’t mean that you are good at everything that those pictures represent.

The bottom line is that you don’t want to ruin the wood by applying Thompson Water seal incorrectly.

It’s not just bad for your stuff, it will also mess up the boards that you just finished. If you’re trying to waterproof pool decking, then all of that hard work will be for nothing if the seal wasn’t applied correctly.

The only way to know for sure is to test the wood before you put Thompson Water seal on it. This is a bit more involved than just throwing some water on it and seeing what happens.

You need to actually submerge the wood in water for an extended period of time and see if it leaks.

You should go buy a few plastic bins with lids. Then, drill a few holes in the bottom of them so that they’re basically waterproof once you put the bin on its side.

Now fill them up with water and put your wood inside. If the water stays on the bottom, then you’re good to go.

If the water is leaking out, then you’ll need to re-think your plan of waterproofing with Thompson water seal.

You could get some tanks of waterproof coating from a hardware store. I don’t think they’re that expensive though.

If you check online for “waterproof wood” you’ll find all kinds of stuff that people use like Thompson Water seal or creosote. If you do a little research and buy the right kind of treatment then you can save yourself time and hassle down the road.

You can waterproof your deck without destroying it’s look. The job is very easy and you should be proud of yourself.

You just need to figure out how you’re going to do it in the first place.

That’s all up to you though. Good luck with the rest of this project and let me know how it goes for you!
