The first thing to consider when buying a fire pit is whether it needs a liner or not. Fire pits are usually made from wood, but they can also be made out of other materials such as concrete, brick, steel, tile and even plastic. A fire pit with a liner will prevent the heat from escaping into your home if there is no way to ventilate the flames.
A fire pit without a liner is like having a fireplace without any chimney. If you have one of these types of fires, you’ll get hot spots all over the place and the flames won’t spread very far. You might burn yourself or others nearby if you don’t keep them away from the firepit.
Fire Pit Liner Types:
There are two main types of liners used in fire pits today: galvanized steel and zinc plated steel.
This type of liner is the most common type. It consists of small pieces of steel welded together. These pieces are held together by a thin layer of copper or brass which acts as a barrier between the elements and the metal itself. When heated, the layers separate allowing air to flow through and creating a flame inside the fire pit.
Grenadine Steel – These liners are manufactured using a chemical reaction between lead and chlorine gas. They’re strong, durable and resistant to corrosion. However, they do require regular maintenance because they rust easily.
Zinc Plated Steel – Zinc plating is achieved through the use of nickel and chromium alloying elements. These metals react with each other to form a thin layer of protective coating on the surface of the metal.
Zinc plating is also durable and resistant to corrosion. However, it requires regular maintenance because the protective layer will wear away over time.
Fire Pit Liner Maintenance:
Both types of fire pits need to be inspected on a regular basis and can be repaired using any of the following methods:
1. Galvanizing – This involves dipping or coating the steel with hot molten zinc. The thickness of the coating can be increased to prevent wear and tear.
This type of fire pit liner is made up of steel panels. It does not require welding and is usually held together by bolts. This type of fire pit has a thicker layer of protective coating that covers the metal surface and prevents the pit from rusting.
These panels can be placed in different arrangements, such as a hexagonal, square or circular design. This type of fire pit can be easily transported and used outdoors.
Zinc Plated – This type of fire pit is made from steel panels that have had a thin layer of protective coating applied. This coating helps prevent the pit from rusting.
However, this protective coating will wear away over time and the pit will need to be re-coated. The coating can be re-applied through painting or dipping the panels in molten zinc. It is a good option for people who want a temporary fire pit that can be easily disassembled after use.
2. Zinc Regeneration -The protective coating will wear away over time because it is very thin. This process can be reversed by applying a new protective coating of molten zinc to the metal surface.
2. Chemical Cleaning – This involves the use of chemicals such as rust remover or a dry acid that is applied to the surface of the pit. It can be used on galvanized panels or steel panels to remove any rust, dirt and other deposits that have built up over time.
3. Electroplating – This is similar to chemical cleaning in that a chemical solution is applied to the surface of the pit. However, an electric current is also applied to the metal, which helps dissolve the deposits. The process is simpler and less time-consuming than chemical cleaning.
4. Sand Blasting – This involves blasting the steel with sand or another type of media. It is quick and effective for cleaning off rust and dirt from the metal surface.
Galvanizing – Galvanizing increases the thickness of the protective barrier coating on steel panels. This means that it is more durable and less likely to rust. This type of fire pit can be used outdoors for long periods of time without any need for maintenance.
The panels are linked together using bolts and do not require welding. Galvanizing helps prevent the pit from rusting even when it is used outdoors.
These panels can be stacked in different arrangements, such as a hexagonal, pentagonal or square design. This type of pit is ideal for people who want a fire pit that can be easily transported, set up and taken down.
Zinc Plating – This type of fire pit is made from steel panels that have a protective barrier applied to them. This barrier helps prevent the pit from rusting.
This type of fire pit is more durable than a steel fire ring with no protective barrier coating. The panels can be stacked in a variety of arrangements to form different shapes. It is ideal for home use and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
Galvanizing – Galvanizing involves dipping the steel panels into a bath of molten zinc. This increases the thickness of the protective barrier coating on the metal and helps prevent rust.
It does not require welding or the use of bolts, which means the panels can be easily stacked or linked together to form different shapes. It can be used both indoors and outdoors.
1. Galvanizing – The zinc plating on steel panels ensures they don’t rust, even if they are being used outdoors. This type of fire pit can be used both indoors and outdoors because it is durable and easy to maintain.
In addition to these we have two more categories for the fire pit tables, which are DuraFlame and Duraflame. These are described below.
However, there is another option that you may want to consider and that is flame resistant fire pit pads. These pads cover your existing fire pit and provide a layer of protection between the fire and the surface underneath. They are available in a range of different sizes and shapes to suit your fire pit. You can find a selection at Fire Pits and Outdoor Fireplaces .
There are a number of advantages to building your own fire pit rather than buying one that is prefabricated. These advantages include the fact that you can build it to fit in with your existing patio or decking and you can also make sure it is the perfect shape and size for your space. However, there are also some disadvantages to building your own fire pit. The main one is that you will need to do a fair amount of work to build it. You will also need to source the materials, which may not be as easy as going to your local home improvement store.
There is nothing quite like sitting around an open fire, roasting marshmallows and making smores while you chat with friends and family. If you have a fire pit at your home or your yard, you really should invest in a fire pit cover. A cover will help to protect your fire pit from the elements and ensure it lasts for as long as possible. If you already have a fire pit, you may also want to consider building a surround for it. There are a number of different materials that can be used to build a surround, including stone, brick and even wood.
Fires aren’t just for the cold winter months; there is something very relaxing about sitting around a warm fire on a summer’s evening. If you enjoy having a fire, you may also want to think about buying a fire pit for your yard. Fire pits are great because they let you have an open fire but are designed to contain the fire and keep it from spreading. Fire pits are also popular because they can be used to heat up things such as food and even boil water. Before you buy a prefabricated fire pit or build your own, there are a few things you should consider.
Choose a Location for Your Fire Pit
Before you begin building your fire pit you will need to choose the location for it. You will also need to measure the area you want your fire pit to be as the container that you put the fire in will need to fit in this area.
You will need to place your fire pit somewhere that it is permitted. Most neighborhoods will have rules about having an open fire on your property and you may need to get permission from your local council before you can build one.
If you are allowed to have a fire pit, the next thing you will need to think about is placement. You will want to place the fire pit somewhere that it is accessible and somewhere that is not going to pose a hazard. You will also want to place it somewhere that is going to be pleasant to be. The last thing you will want is for the fire to be too close to a hedge or fence that may catch alight. You will also need to have access to an electricity supply as most fire pits require a plug or some sort of fuel supply such as gas or liquid propane.
The other thing to think about is safety. You will need to keep children and pets away from the fire pit at all times as they could cause a spark to fly into the surrounding area causing a fire. You also need to think about ventilation as when the fire gets going it can create a build up of carbon monoxide, which can be poisonous if there is not enough ventilation.
The Size of Your Fire Pit
The size of your fire pit is going to depend on how many people you want to be able to sit around it. Most fire pits are made in square or circle shapes so you can choose whichever one you think will look best in your garden. The actual dimensions of the pit itself need to be thought out as well as you will need to be able to fit a suitable container to put the fire in.
You will also need to think about the size of the container that you are going to use as a fire pit as this is what is going to contain the fire and act as a barrier between the fire and the surrounding area. You need to make sure that you get a suitable one for your fire pit as if it is too small or too big then it won’t contain the fire properly. You will be able to buy purpose made fire pit containers or you could use something like a metal drum. Whatever you use, you will need to make sure that it is strong enough to contain the fire and won’t melt if it gets too close to the flames.
Building a Fire Pit
If you are going to be building a fire pit rather than buying a prefabricated one, you have a few more choices to make. You will first of all need to decide what type of fire pit you want. The two most popular are the rings and the braziers.
The main difference between a ring and a brazier is that the brazier has rounded edges on the inside which make it easier to sit around as there is no hard edge pressing into your back.
Once you have decided what type of pit you want, you then have to decide what material you are going to make it from. The most common types of fire pit are made from either stone or brick although there are a lot more options today than there used to be.
Possibly the cheapest option is to buy an old steel drum and set it in concrete. Just make sure that you scrub it out really well first to get rid of any traces of the contents of the drum before you set it in the concrete as otherwise you are going to have a very pungent smelly fire pit.
You could either build yours up from scratch or you could get a child’s swimming pool and set that in the ground. If you get a cheap enough pool, it shouldn’t crack under the pressure of the soil filling it up. Again, make sure that you get it clean before you try to use it as a fire pit or the smell might put you and your guests off your barbecued food.
A stone ring is probably the most traditional type of fire pit and can be made from small boulders or even large cobbles. The actual type of stone you use isn’t really all that important as long as it is solid and doesn’t have a lot of give in it when you tap it.
Gravel is also an option as a fire pit and can give the same effect as a ring if you arrange it correctly. This type of fire pit can be ideal if you are using a metal drum as your container as the gravel stops the drum from sinking into the ground as much.
Brick is also a good option for a fire pit and the bricks can either be set on their side or you can use special firebrick as the main layers which will retain most of the heat giving more of an oven effect. Use mortar to hold the bricks in place and make the fire pit as high or as low as you want.
Finally there is the prefabricated fire pits that you can either get from a garden center or online. They come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and made from high quality materials to ensure that they don’t degrade over time while also retaining as much heat as possible.
Building your own fire pit can be both fun and add a bit of individuality to your garden but it isn’t essential that you build one.
Once you have built your fire pit or bought a prefabricated one, you then need to get it ready for when guests arrive. This means finding some good firewood and there is nothing worse than deciding you want a fire and finding the wood is all wet.
The easiest solution to this is to buy a load of seasoned wood and keeping it by your fire pit. Seasoned wood is wood that has been stored in a dry place for at least a year and won’t be as likely to make your fire go out.
If you buy a load of wood, try to get it cut to the same size so that it burns for the same length of time. This might seem like a pain but it is actually quite enjoyable to sit there with a beverage of your choice and split logs into equal pieces.
