The first thing you need to do when buying a new light switch cover is check if it will fit your light switch. If not, then get one from a store or online. You might have to wait while they are checking the label before shipping out. When ordering online, make sure you select “custom” which means that you want a custom made cover for your particular switch. Most stores don’t offer this option.
If you’re going to buy a light switch cover online, then look for one that’s made of plastic (like the ones pictured above). They usually come in different colors and patterns. You can also choose from wood, metal, or even fabric. Plastic is easier to clean than glass so it makes sense that most people would opt for it over other materials.
You’ll probably also want to pick up some extra screws and washers. These items are used to secure the cover onto the wall. You may need them because your cover doesn’t exactly match the rest of your decor.
Another thing you’ll want to consider is whether or not you’d like a white or black switch cover. White switches tend to reflect less light than black switches, so they’re better for reading at night when there isn’t much lighting around.
You’ll probably want to paint the inside of the cover with something like Krylon Fusion Paint. This stuff dries clear and doesn’t leave any streaks. I recommend using a brush rather than a sponge because it helps you avoid getting too much on your hand and arm. You can use whatever kind of paint you’d like; just make sure it’s compatible with Krylon Fusion Paint (and that it won’t stain your walls).
Later on, when it’s dry, you can place the cover over your outlet and screw the screws in tightly. The washers will provide extra support so that the holes of the cover don’t crack.
If you’re not exactly artistically inclined then you might want to pick up a light switch cover from the store. You can usually find one that matches your room’s decor.
You can also go the extra mile and decorate the cover yourself. You can use permanent markers to create your own designs or you can even use acrylic paint. If you’re not exactly artistically inclined then permanent markers will be easier to work with and they won’t slide around when you place them on the cover.
Now, just place the cover over your light switch and screw in the screws from the backside of the plate. Once that’s done, switch on your lights! If everything went accordingly, you should have beautiful lighting!
