What is Bubble Level?
Bubble level is a measurement used to determine the height of your home’s foundation. It helps you know how much space between the ground and your house you have. You can use it to make sure that there are no leaks or other problems with the foundations of your home. A good way to get a sense of where your foundation is located would be using a bubble level. There are two types of bubble levels: horizontal and vertical.
They both measure the same thing, but they do so in different ways.
How Does a Bubble Level Work?
A bubble level measures the distance from the surface of the earth to a point at which it intersects another surface. When you stand on top of one end of a piece of string, you will see that when you touch the bottom part of your foot to something flat (like your hand), it looks like your heel touches down near your ankle. Similarly, if you were standing on the other side of the string, you would see that your heel touched down near your toes. If you were able to move around on either side of the string without touching anything else, then you could easily tell where each point was.
The same principle applies to measuring the height of a wall. You need to know where your foundation is located before you can calculate how high up the wall it is. If you were standing on top of the string, you would see that your heel was touching down near your knee. So if you were measuring the distance between those points, then your bubble level would show you the height of your foundation.
The most common type of bubble level is a horizontal one. These measurements are made by looking up and around at various parts of a structure to measure how high it rises above its base. The higher the measurement, the greater the height above ground. In order to find your foundation, you need a bubble level. The bubble level that you use takes advantage of something called the “right angle.”.
If you were to take two pieces of string and lay one across the other so that they make a right angle (the shape that all four sides of a house corner make), then putting your bubble level on that corner would give you a precise reading. You can then run these numbers through a formula to obtain the exact height in feet. The measurements can be marked on the tool with chalk or paint so that you don’t have to take your eyes off of the wall while taking them. You should always have a tape measure with you when taking these types of measurements so that you can record each one individually in order to come up with an accurate average.
With a vertical bubble level, the tool sits flat or nearly flat against the wall. You would see that the bubble is exactly in the middle between the upper and lower parts of the wall.
The other type of level, a vertical level, is made for measuring the height of a single point. In order to measure your foundation, you would need something like this. You would put one end on the ground, then use a measuring tape or some other measuring device to find out how high above the ground it is. To get started, you will need to hold the tool in place on a flat surface. You would then look down at the bubble in order to find the angle at which the bubble sits.
That is how high or low your point is in relation to the center of the earth. Then, all you need to do is take a quick reading with a tape measure and plug the numbers into a simple formula to come up with the average height. You would then put the other end on the highest wall you can reach and use that reading, combined with your previous one, to determine the height above ground of that wall. As with the horizontal level, you should mark each measurement with chalk or paint so as not to take your eyes off of the wall while taking it. Taking a series of measurements in this way will give you an accurate idea of how high above the ground your walls are.
Though the idea of climbing around on the outside of your walls may be a little frightening, it’s actually not that bad. The most dangerous part is getting up on the roof in the first place, after that you’re fine (just don’t look down). You will need to take a few precautions, however. Always make sure that there are no insects crawling on the walls and that there are no loose stones or bricks that could fall off when you climb up.
In addition to taking these measurements, you will also need to find the location of your front door. Hopefully another wall, or some other feature of your property, runs directly in line with it. This will make it possible for you to use a direct reading on a bubble level that you can set on a point on your house, then run straight over to the door and take a reading there. Also, make sure the roof is solid before putting your weight on it, especially if it has not been used in a while.
The most important thing to remember when taking measurements is that you are only going off one side of the house. If you go to the north wall, then go to the south wall and take measurements, you will not get an accurate idea of how high above ground level your house is. If you can’t find any other feature that lines up with the door, then you will have to use a tape measure and run it from the center of your bubble level out to the door. This requires some basic geometry to solve for the height of the point on your house in relation to your front door. If you need help with this, ask an adult for help.
Once you have all of your measurements, plug them into one of the many online vertical distance calculators out there. Instead, you need to go around the house and take measurements on each side. Starting at one end of the house, take a series of measurements from one wall to the other on both the front and back side. Do this as evenly as you can, taking measurements every few feet if possible. If there are any windows or doors, measure right across them so that you can get an accurate measurement for each wall.
Be sure to convert feet into inches before entering the numbers.
After you have all of your numbers plugged in, the calculator will give you an answer. This answer will tell you how high or low your house sits in relation to sea level. If the house sits low, there are a few steps you can take to remedy this situation. You can dig a hole a few feet down on one side of the house and fill it up with sand or gravel. This will act as a type of retaining wall and prevent the house from sinking any lower.
You can also have a company come in and pump concrete or some other sturdy bulk material into the ground under the house to achieve the same effect. As you can see from the image above, this house sits 10 feet below sea level. You can then compare this number to the number you got from measuring your front door. If they are not close to the same, then you will have to go back and recheck your measurements.
Although it is not as quick or easy as having someone come in and raise the house for you, doing it yourself will save you a lot of money in the long run and you will gain a valuable new skill in the process. With a little determination and elbow grease, your home will be as good as new.
If your numbers do match up, then your problem is most likely a sinkhole that is eating away at your land. In this case, all you can do is hire a company to come in and pump cement into the ground surrounding the house in an effort to prevent it from caving in any further. It will also be necessary for you to maintain upkeep on this cement wall by having the company return every once in awhile to refill the wall with more cement.
