The flex rod is the main attachment that comes with the dremel. If you are only going to get one attachment, this would be the one to get simply because of its versatility. You can use it for cutting, sanding, detailing, etc..
It can be used for both small and large projects. So, if you are only going to get one then I would get this one.

The flex rod comes with 8 standard bits and 1 carving bit. It also has a wrench to change the bits. Of all the attachments, this is my personal favorite.
